What is 5g?

First, let’s clarify what 5G frequencies are; 5G is a Radio Frequency that sits between 30 kHz300 GHz within the electromagnetic spectrum range. Radiofrequency EMFs consist of oscillating electric and magnetic fields; the number of oscillations per second is referred to as  “frequency,” and is described in units of hertz (Hz). As the field propagates away from a source, it transfers power from its source, described in units of watt (W), which is equivalent to joule (J, a measure of energy) per unit of time (t).

Between the 30 Hz to 1 GHz range is the radio frequencies used to transmit radio or television waves, from the 1 GHz 300 GHz frequencies is the “microwave” range, which can be used to cook food, just like in your microwave. When the field impacts upon material, it interacts with the atoms and molecules in that material. When a biological body is exposed to radiofrequency EMFs, some of the power is reflected away from the body, and some is absorbed by it. Claims have been made that because 5G does not fall within the nonionizing range of radiation frequencies, that this means it is safe, as there is no acute heating of the skin.


What is the Cause of Concern for 5G?

This ‘microwave’ range of the electromagnetic spectrum has been studied by multiple scientists and institutions around the world. In 2020 in the Appeals that matter or not on a moratorium on the deployment of the fifth generation, 5G, for microwave radiation paper published on PubMed Central, states, that  classification has been increased to a Group 1, with the same carcinogenic property levels as asbestos and smoking.

Concerns have been raised by some of the best and brightest scientists and medical professionals around the world, over 250 scientists from 35 countries, and over 3000 medical professionals have written letters on the health risks of 5G to the European Commission, W.H.O and United Nations raising the issue and the need to ensure the safety of the 5G technologies. “Numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines. These peerreviewed scientific studies have shown that exposure to levels of radiofrequency radiation that comply with international standards produce harmful effects on the body, ranging from severe to unpleasant health symptoms. They include:

Dr. Yael Stein MD of the Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel wrote a letter to the FCC Commissioner in 2016, his letter addresses the study of Human sweat glands as helical antennas, he raised the point of the differentiation between pH levels of the surface of the skin and the dermis, which creates an electromotive force that would provide the necessary charge flow in the duct. Using computer simulations, it was clearly shown that sweat gland ducts are high absorption structures of millimeter waves.

Not only can the 5G frequencies have negative health impacts upon humans, but it’s also showing to have harmful impacts upon the welfare of our environment. Scientific studies conducted on flies have shown devastating impacts to the development and growth of the fly’s life cycle as shown in the paper published Oct 2014 titled Apoptotic cell death during Drosophila oogenesis is differentially increased by electromagnetic radiation depending on modulation, intensity and duration of exposure’, stating;

Attempting to address the dependence of NIR bioeffectiveness on these factors, apoptosis in the model biological system Drosophila melanogaster was studied under different exposure protocols. A signal generator was used operating alternatively under Continuous Wave (CW) or Frequency Modulation (FM) emission modes, at three power output values (10 dB, 0, −10 dB), under four carrier frequencies (100,
395, 682, 900 MHz). Newly emerged flies were exposed either acutely (6 min or 60 min on the 6th day), or repeatedly (6 min or 60 min daily for the first 6 days of their life). All exposure protocols resulted in an increase of apoptotic cell death (ACD) observed in egg chambers, even at very low electric field strengths.”



It appears that these affects may even be a deliberate effect of 5G technology as Military grade weaponry. Frequencies above 20GHz are used in technology such as the Active Denial System used to disperse crowds.

One of the most interesting NLW currently under development is the Active Denial System (ADS), which has been developed since 2002 under a Pentagon Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) program, and is now close to entering production. This produces a highly focused beam of millimeterwave energy, which rapidly inflicts an intolerable sensation of burning and induces an instantaneous and involuntary impulse to get away from the source. The sensation dissipates quite quickly once the victim moves out of the ADS beam, and the beam penetrates the skin to a depth of only 1/64th of an inch.

Two versions of the ADS have been developed: System 1 is a containerized system mounted on a HUMVEE; this was tested on volunteers at three separate sites across the US in 200506, leading up to an Extended User Evaluation (EUE) in late2007. A more militarized version of the ADS, System 2, was also developed under the ACTD by Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona, and underwent a capabilities and limitations assessment in early2008. While designed to be nonlethal, it’s acknowledged that prolonged exposure to the ADS beam could cause permanent injury (including sight damage) and even death.”

How does 5G affect the local Bathurst Community?

Within the Bathurst region and its surrounding suburbs there are 23 5G capable telecommunications towers, with at least 10 concentrated in the Bathurst CBD area. Upon conducting our research of the local towers and their Radio Frequency output we chose to focus on two main towers, the first is tower 2795021 located at 9 Illumba way, Kelso behind the Masonic Hall, the second was tower 2795016 located at 110 William St, Bathurst, situated above the Knickerbocker Hotel.

The RFNSA site provides an EME report and a certificate of compliance for each tower. In order to undertake our research we used a TriField EMF Meter Model ICTF2 which has the capability to read electromagnetic frequencies in three ranges: magnetic, electric and radio frequencies. For this research we utilized the RF functions of the device. The below image shows an example display of the output readings of the device, the peak measurement and field measurement will provide us with the necessary information to conduct our research.

Tower 2795021 Illumba Way, Kelso

Below we have provided images of the readings that were taken on the 26th Sept 2023 at the Illumba way tower. These images were taken within a 50m distance from the tower. Image 1 shows a reading of 10.523 in the field measurement, the device is unable to establish a peak reading as the measurements are too high at 1 .

Image number 2 displays a field measurement of 13.615, the device displays a peak reading of 1 .

According to the EME report provided by RFNSA, the peak for the Illumba way tower should be at 761.48 mW/m2, however our device could not provide a peak read as the output is above 1000 mW/m2.

Tower 2795016- 110 William St, Bathurst

Below we have provided images of the readings that were taken on the 26th Sept 2023 at the William St tower. These images were taken within a 50m distance from the tower. Image 1 shows a reading of 13.752 in the field measurement, the device is unable to establish a peak reading as the measurements are too high at 1- – –

According to the EME report provided by RFNSA, the peak for the William St tower should be at 336.72 mW/m2, but as previously pointed out, our device could not provide a peak read as the output is above 1000 mW/m2.

Granted, the greater the distance you are from the towers, the less intense the exposure to the frequencies, readings beyond 200m were significantly lower than those within the 50m. Readings taken within homes also show a significant reduction in a home 100m away from the tower; however homes that are closer in proximity or that contain devices such as SMART meters, SMART televisions, SMART lights or any other device that has internet capabilities, increases the potential risk within the home.


It appears, from our research that there is a series of discrepancies between safety standards as those set out in the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the multitude of scientists, medical professionals and studies that have been conducted around the world where evidence is building to show the hazards that surround the impacts of 5G both on human health and the environment.

– These standards only protect against the short term, acute, heating affects of radiofrequency radiation and not the long term, non-heating affects that are relevant for people working and living near telecommunications transmitters.

– It focuses predominantly upon single exposure affects and ignores cumulative effects of frequencies and toxins.

– It fails to consider the affects of vulnerable populations, such as those with hypersensitivities, the elderly, pregnant woman and children.

– There are no long term studies of the effects of radiofrequency radiation on human populations.

– Scientific studies have found adverse effects on the body, suggestive of illness at levels of exposure thousands of times lower that the ARPANSA standards.

Legislation implemented to regulate the establishment and use of mobile phone towers and their effects is inadequate. It applies to telecommunication carriers and not companies constructing infrastructure, and exempts some telecommunications equipment from local government planning; it effectively abrogates the community’s democratic rights.

It is essential that necessary steps are undertaken to ensure that the human populace is not being forced into an experiment without consent, that all proper due diligence and safety precautions are taken and established for the use of this technology.

We understand that there is an ever growing need for new technology to support the growing economy and that it is a necessary component to progress, but we ask, at what cost? As members of council and with the ability to influence decision making as well as undertake further
investigations, it is imperative that action is taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community.

Some of these towers are located in close proximity to schools and nursing homes where our most vulnerable are being exposed.

In 2019 Randwick council made a stand and called on the local Government to halt the roll out of 5G cell towers. Randwick City Council, “TPG small cell towers will not roll out” Media Release 18.03.19

Similar actions have been taken in many other countries around the world such as Switzerland, USA, Ireland and Brussels.

The power lies within our hands to initiate the necessary steps to make a change for a better future, for the community and this beautiful town we call home, Bathurst. I await your response.
